Secrets To Growing A Downline
The MLM industry has evolved from the days of Nutrilite and Shakley, to be sure. The focus, since the 1990′s has consistently been, ‘how do I grow my downline?’ No doubt, that is what your upline has been teaching you since the day you sent in your check and made your first list of family and friends. Recruit, recruit, and recruit! Every company training CD and every company training event you’ve ever attended, I’m betting, has taught you to focus on growing your downline and that product sales were secondary. Am I right?
Let’s talk a little bit about why your company wants you to focus on growing your downline, instead of focusing on growing your “distributorship”. You see, the company and the leaders in your upline have long-ago figured out that a few things about the people in the network marketing industry. They figured out that most people want to make their lives better and they want to hope and to believe they can make that happen by their new-found discovery of this ‘great opportunity.’
They’ve also figured out that most people, once they learn how hard it is to build a REAL business, give up – most people are simply not willing to work hard enough to make it over that hill that everyone is trying to climb. They know that 95% of the people recruited into the company by your efforts to grow your downline will have quit within 6 months.
With the knowledge that your company and its leaders have about the average distributor, they have quite logically figured out the most profitable way for them to go about their business. That is, they have learned to motivate you and teach you to ‘use them’ to motivate others, though the use of tools they provide. They train you to capitalize on that motivation to recruit others and grow your downline. They really don’t care if that new recruit quits in 6 months, and in fact, they are banking on it! They know that new recruit will on average consume, maybe $1000 worth of product before they go (it’s usually much higher than that) – and the company knows they’ll make at least of that. Most importantly, they can blame that person for quitting and site ‘not trying hard enough’ as the reason they made no money.
But, the smart people in the network marketing industry have figured out that trying to gain long-term wealth by trying to grow your downline is a waste of time. You have no control over the people you recruit; you don’t know what’s going on in their lives; you can only motivate them artificially for so long. What kind of business model is that? Real wealth is made through the sale of quality products and services – period. Preferably, these sales are recurring. But, even that is not necessary. And, I guarantee your company will NEVER tell you this. They are looking out for themselves.
But, there is hope – there are a few good companies out there that have structured their training and their compensation plans to make it worth your time- they are doing it the RIGHT way, and they are at the forefront of a huge industry shift that’s currently taking place. I, for one, am not focusing on growing my downline and instead am placing my focus on promoting the products and services of one of these other companies.
