Written by Thomas McMurrain on January 28th, 2010

Good search engine optimization is the most important aspect of marketing your website and the only way your website will receive respectable rankings with the search engines. Simply designing a website and launching onto the server does not mean you will immediately begin receiving traffic.

So your goal is to reach the top of Google, well then don\’t rely on luck because it won\’t get you there. There are two important requirements for being number one and they are; understanding the six search engine optimization tactics and designing a site that is search engine friendly. Conquer these two animals and you are half way to the top. Without a search engine optimization (SEO) plan you are probably kidding yourself.

So what is Search Engine Optimization Anyway?

Backlinking, bots, and optimized pages might seem a little intimidating, but in reality they are not. These terms are linked to very simple and mundane tasks that are required by the search engines to reach number 1 in your keyword category. The more you follow these tactics the more noticed you will be by the search engines.

How to Optimize Your Website

If you are ready to do it here is the Holy Grail of SEO. Is it really this easy? Do these tactics really work? You bet they do, but with that said, I must tell you that they are not immediate, but once achieved, they are lasting. Good SEO strategy can create huge returns over the long run, not so much over the short haul.

Select the Desired Keywords and Scream It from the Mountain Top.

Choosing the right keywords is like choosing the right spouse, choose the wrong one and you will have a life of misery, choose the right one and life will be grand. Keywords are the fertilizer of growing lasting search engine results. They should be very consistent throughout your domain, title, keyword, description tags and body of your website. Make sure the search term you want to be number one for is everywhere.

Content Must Be of the Highest Quality:

High impact content requires that your site contains quality information on the subject of your keyword. It must be on point and what the reader is looking for to achieve the results that are created by SEO. From the time the bot or spider reaches your site to the time it leaves, your content should be laced with your keyword and relevant content to realize the SERP you desire. An extra hour here and there to make sure that your site has high quality content will pay huge dividends.

KISS, Keep Internet Site Simple:

The bots of the search engines are driven by mathematics so they look for equations on every website. So far we have keyword plus content. Now it is time to add a site that is well laid out and simple to navigate. Utilizing a site map is something the bots give kudos to so do not miss this simple addition to your site. Bots do not like fancy websites so avoid lots of images and flash especially on your home page.

Get Your Link On:

The search engines bot also looks at the company you keep around you. If you have a bunch of irrelevant sites linked to you, the bot is not going to think much of your site. However if you have other sites linked to your site that share similar keywords and content then you will get high fives all the way around the search engine optimization process. Be sure to link to a minimum of 50 website that show the search engine that you are for real, for real.

Get on The Social Networks:

Do not forget to promote your site on as many social networking sites as you can. Posting, tweeting, blogging and joining networking sites is a great way of driving traffic to your site and the search engines like to see links to your site on many of these sites.

Market Your Site On the Social Venues

Use other venues for driving traffic to your site such as article marketing, blogging, and video marketing and provide links from that content to your website. Apply the techniques that you use for search engine optimization on your website to the content that you create for these other marketing venues.

Just as in farming you have to cultivate the ground, plant the seeds and water them. SEO is no different. In the beginning it seems that you do a lot of work and receive little reward and in the end it will seem that you do little work for huge rewards, thus is the nature of farming and search engine optimization.
